Test Valley Roofing is run by Charlie, whose family has worked roofs for three generations. The firm is small on purpose: six roofers who turn up early, do the job properly, and answer the phone when something goes wrong.

The trade came down the family: Charlie's grandfather roofed, his father has more than 46 years in the trade, and Charlie has run roofing companies of his own for around ten years. That is not a marketing line so much as a working method – the habits of two generations are built into how this firm strips, lays and finishes a roof.
